  • Pt. Lookout Hospital and Confederate Prisoner of War Camp
    • Pt Lookout MD and the Northern Neck -  Article published in the December 2019 issue of the Northern Neck of Virginia Historical Magazine.  Article with excellent history of Pt. Lookout as both hospital and POW camp.  Latter part of article focuses on men from the Northern Neck of Virginia who were imprisoned there.
    • Point Lookout, MD - View of Hammond General Hospital & U.S. General Depot For Prisoners  A beautiful colored lithograph from the Library of Congress showing a bird's-eye view of the Point Lookout peninsula as it appeared in 1864.  Dozens of buildings are meticulously shown and annotated.
    • Prisoner lists for Point Lookout Prison Camp for Confederates are available on microfilm.  They are also available online at Family Search.  Images of 429 volumes of Confederate Prisoners of War records, including Point Lookout.  (Free, but account required)
    •  Pt. Lookout Prisoner of War Camp - 1972 book by Edwin W. Beitzell.  Available in the SMCHS bookstore.
  • St. Mary's Men Who Served
    • St. Mary's Men Who Served in the War Between the States Edwin Beitzel's unpublished, handwritten manuscript with the names of St. Mary's County men who served in the civil war.  Lists are divided into six folders (selectable using bookmarks in the document): 1) Unionists, 2) Notes, 3) Confederacy, 4) Federal Draft Enrollment Books, 5) US Service Black, and 6) US Service White.  Every entry is meticulously documented with references.  This is the only known comprehensive list of St. Mary's County Civil War soldiers. The newspaper article below is a summary of his work.
    • In The War Between The States - 4-Part series in the Enterprise published in March and April of 1978.  Presents research done by Edwin Beitzell on the men from St. Mary's County who served during the Civil War.  Lists for both whites and blacks who served in the Union and Confederacy.  Mr. Beitzell had prepared this information as a manuscript for an unpublished book (see above).
